Indie-rock band performs at USC

When lead singer Jason Shine placed an ad in his local paper for a bass player after moving to Los Angeles, he had no idea that the person who would respond would be Julio Montero, longtime friend and co-founder of the band they had created in Brooklyn back in 2005. Family Cave was soon born — or, rather, reborn — through what Shine calls “sheer coincidence.”

The Documented Life

I interview people about their selfies. It’s how they keep track of their lives. Mr. Ansari offered a conversation, but people wanted documentation. We interrupt conversations for documentation all the time.”

These days, when people are alone, or feel a moment of boredom, they tend to reach for a device. In a movie theater, at a stop sign, at the checkout line at a supermarket and, yes, at a memorial service, reaching for a device becomes so natural that we start to forget that there is a reason, a good reason, to sit still with our thoughts: It does honor to what we are thinking about. It does honor to ourselves.”

coffee-culture: Please visit us sometime at Think Tank Gallery!

coffee-culture:

This is one of the the most innovative blends of coffee and art, a true “Coffee Art”. The Think Tank Gallery is also a great blend of Coffeehouse, gallery/studio space, art parties, and DJ events. This is a seriously creative and cutting edge public space. Almost make me want to do a trip out to LA just to see this place.

ANNOUNCING AVI ROTH: COFFEEGRAPH – A COFFEE SHOW ABOUT ART. OPENING DECEMBER 1ST AT THE THINK TANK!

Carved into Downtown Los Angeles’ Historic Fashion District, Think Tank Gallery and LA Coffee Club have teamed up with LA Weekly to present a feast for the senses with an event series that embraces Downtown’s accelerating craft coffee culture. Showcasing the art of Avi Roth, a unique abstract expressionist that creates entirely from the textures of coffee, Think Tank Gallery incorporates his unique Coffeegraph technique into its massive space. Transformed into a fully-sculptured coffee bar,  LA’s most exciting names in coffee will serve from Dec 1 – 21. LA Coffee Club and select partners invite the community for a series of events ranging from coffee table conversations and workshops, to live music and performance art with the goal of sparking creative discussion over a cup of craft coffee.

Coffee Pass presale rolled out today, which will get you access to every event and all-you-can-drink craft roasted coffee for the duration of the exhibit.

Purchase your Coffee Pass at presale price, check the calendar and find more info here; and RSVP to the opening here.

"A Molecular Metaphor for the Future of Social Culture"-

The mavericks — including the likes of
Carter Cleveland (Artsy), Evan Sharp and Ben Silbermann (Pinterest), and Max Sebala (Tumblr) — were asked to draw the future of social media, capturing the trajectory of one of the fastest moving realms of technology with the stroke of a pen. The results are simple, funny, and sometimes surprisingly eloquent, such as Oliver Luckett’s design here:

MTV Video Music Awards Honor Justin Timberlake

Inside the arena, too, it seemed as if not paying direct attention was the norm, too, if the cutaway shots of the famous and bored during the show were any indication: One Direction studiously mute during the brief ’N Sync reunion, Drake averting his eyes as Miley Cyrus raunchily twerked, Rihanna barely moving her head for anyone.”
